The flames licking at the logs in the fireplace were impossibly real in the same way that the story his father was telling him was impossibly real: both should be highly unlikely occurrences, yet here they were. It was like listening to the bedtime story his father had told him every night, a story he only dared to believe as real in his mind. Sam's father had narrated the story of the Grid as if the elder Flynn had truly been there, and Sam never doubted for a moment that he had. But the stories had stopped and Sam was left alone with the echoing words. While his belief in the existence of the Grid waned with age, and the real world asserted itself upon him, Sam allowed himself to think that maybe his dad really had taken off for reasons unknown. But with Alan Bradley's visit on the anniversary of Flynn's disappearance, a part of the scab left by his abandonment had fallen away, and Sam felt himself drawn back to the past only to be tossed into the future. Sam was now a part of the story and he had no idea what to make of that.
